In text messaging etiquette, asterisks are commonly used to denote a correction of some error in an earlier text. Asterisk corrections typically specify the corrected words, but do not explicitly mark the words that should be replaced, the reader is expected to understand which word is being corrected.

Correct errors by writing the correct forms in their place. Use codes in the margin to identify the type of error(s), for example, VOC = a lexical error. Students have to identify the error(s) and if possible make a correction. Alternatively put crosses in the margin for the number of errors in each line.

Common spelling and grammar mistakes are often indicated with specific symbols. For example, “sp” in the margin indicates a spelling mistake, while “gr” indicates a grammar mistake. Other symbols, such as # (for a missing word) or [sic] (for a mistake that should be left as it is), are also used.
